These original learning examples show how a BIM research idea connects to a question, method and dissertation structure. They are illustrative plans, not findings from completed studies.
BIM adoption: from topic to research question
Starting area: BIM adoption in small architectural practices.
A focused question: How do project coordinators in small architectural practices describe barriers to sharing model information during design development?
Why it is narrower: The question names a role, an organisational setting, a process and a project stage. It asks about experience rather than promising to measure an industry-wide effect.
Possible method: Semi-structured interviews with a justified, accessible sample. An interview guide could explore responsibilities, information exchanges and examples of coordination difficulties. Access and ethics approval must be confirmed before recruitment.
BIM literature review: compare explanations
Descriptive outline: Software training; collaboration; document management.
Analytical outline: Compare whether studies explain coordination problems through individual skills, unclear responsibilities or incompatible workflows. Examine how each study defines coordination and what evidence supports its explanation.
What the comparison adds: The review can identify disagreements, differences in setting and limits of existing evidence. In your dissertation, use accurate citations to studies you have read; these teaching examples do not invent references.
A structure that follows the question
Introduction: Define the information-sharing problem and its scope. Literature review: Compare explanations and establish your research question. Methodology: Justify the sample, interview approach and analysis. Findings: Present supported themes. Discussion: Relate those themes to the literature and acknowledge limits. Conclusion: Answer the question within the boundaries of the study.
